Why this course exists

A harder person to mislead with a bad chart

Atlas Freight Systems's newly hired Chief Data Officer noticed every department — Regional Ops, Marketing, Finance, HR — makes big decisions from spreadsheets nobody double-checks. This bootcamp is her company-wide response. Day 1 builds critical-thinking foundations (data quality, statistics, charts, cognitive traps); Day 2 applies them with real tools (Excel/Sheets, Power BI, SCQA storytelling, AI literacy, ethics) and closes with a live capstone decision simulation. The goal isn't to make everyone a data analyst — it's to make everyone harder to mislead with a bad chart or a confident-sounding number.

What you'll be able to do

  • Audit a spreadsheet for data-quality problems using the industry-standard six DAMA dimensions, instead of a vague 'this looks off.'
  • Know when to trust the mean, when to reach for the median instead, and why a single outlier can quietly rewrite a headline number.
  • Spot a truncated axis, a dual-axis trick, and a cherry-picked timeframe on sight — and build honest charts of your own.
  • Explain why a strong correlation never proves causation, and actually find the confounding variable instead of just gesturing at the phrase.
  • Build a real, decluttered, interactive dashboard in Power BI Desktop using PivotTable and XLOOKUP skills you'll also use in Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Structure a finding using SCQA and deliver it as a 60-second, recommendation-first pitch a non-analyst audience can act on.
  • Verify an AI-generated data summary against its source before repeating it, and recognize a proxy-variable bias risk before it reaches a decision.

Who it's for & prerequisites

  • Any non-technical business professional who regularly reads, presents, or acts on data — no prior analytics or coding background assumed.
  • Managers and decision-makers who need to interrogate a report or dashboard someone else built, not just build one themselves.
  • Basic comfort opening and editing a spreadsheet (Excel or Google Sheets) — no formulas or prior spreadsheet training required going in.
  • A Windows machine (or Mac with Parallels/VMware Fusion) for the Power BI Desktop sessions — Mac users with neither can substitute Tableau Public.
The business case

Grounded in current numbers, not a hunch

From DataCamp's State of Data & AI Literacy report (2026).

42% of organizations train for it at scaleMost professionals are expected to have this skill without ever being formally taught it
74% of employers would pay a salary premium for itData fluency is a genuinely marketable, career-relevant skill

Curriculum

14 sessions across 2 days

Day 1 (Sessions 0–6) builds the four critical-thinking lenses: data quality, descriptive statistics, chart literacy, and correlation vs. causation. Day 2 (Sessions 7–13) applies them with Power BI, SCQA storytelling, AI trust-but-verify, and data ethics, closing with a live capstone. Tap a session for its length.
